Empire of the Hyena #1: The Spectral Samurai
In the court of Daimyo Blood Takkarra Amané four heroes from distant corners of the Empire are summoned together:
Yag’Gur Gareth is a savage warrior of the Flame Clan who has gained great honour in combat but is seen as a little extreme by his brethren and has therefore been assigned to act as a bodyguard to the disgraced Shadow Monk, Sand-in-Eyes in the hope that he might acquire some of his monastic charges restraint.
Yth Ogami, a cunning warrior trained in the mystic arts of Clan Death, dedicated to purging the disgrace of their parent clan.
Finally a local Half-Orc named Kovac Ashnard, he had been something of a thorn in the side of the Daimyo over the last couple of seasons, stealing from her men and giving the money to poor farmers and peasants, finally he had been captured but was now offered his freedom in return for acting as a local guide to the three Gnoll warriors.
Daimyo Amané had summoned the various heroes because she had recently lost all contact with the village of Kashino, a group of warriors–including several members of Clan Flame–had been sent in to investigate but had vanished.
Travelling to the village our heroes were set upon by Goliath bandits who at first seemed dedicated to the band’s destruction but–upon further questioning–it was revealed that they believed the area of Kashino to have been corrupted and cursed, they were simply trying to prevent people from entering and making matters worse.
Continuing onto the village our heroes discovered it to be deserted and everyone in it to be dead, upon exploring further they discovered the shrine of an honoured ancestor, the samurai Kida Raku, it appeared as though the shrine had been broken into and an ancestral blade stolen.
Before they could consider the implications of this they were attacked by the re-animated bodies of the villagers, they fought them off and the ghostly form of Kida Raku appeared, using his great skill and power to lay the heroes low.
To save his allies Yag’Gur offered to recover Kida’s ancestral blade, return it and then fight an honourable duel against the spirit.
The spirit of Kida Raku agree and the heroes set off, following the tracks of thieves eastwards.
