A few people in the Tides of Change facebook community have asked about playing darkside character (especially with the release of Force & Destiny) and, whilst in a normal Star Wars game, I don’t really think that characters to embrace the darkside fully have a place it did get me thinking about how a short-term darkside game might be fun.
A good example of this was the one-shot that André ran where we had Gothnog play a darksider with myself and theSwamper playing dark trooper style droids, this worked really well for a mission-focussed one-off.

I really enjoyed running my recent Edge of the Empire one-shot Graveyard Shift, the players were great and it seemed to be really well received, this has lead to me planning two additional one-shot, one of which is an Age of Rebellion game where a small Y-Wing squadron attempts to free a prisoner with vital information from Jabba the Hutt and the other a Force & Destiny one-shot where the PCs are a small group of force-sensitives hiding on the Outer Rim who have been experiencing strange dreams that draw them towards an unchartered part of the Sector. One of the players is going to be an R2 unit in my forthcoming Adventures on the Outer Rim one-shot, I’ve always loved how there are lots of different colour schemes for R2s and so I’ve come up with some messing about in Photoshop.

For anyone playing FFG’s Star Wars RPGs, the following program (written by Oggdude) is a great time-saver when it comes to creating characters, it also allows you to create sheets in a couple of different formats, add custom information and provides some excellent GM-ing tools.

When you make a character in one of the FFG Star Wars games (Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion or Force and Destiny) you receive a baseline of characteristics determined by your race and than an amount of experience points to spend on improving characteristics, buying specialisations and other such things. Droids start off with all of their characteristics at one and you have to spend to buy them up whereas other races generally have some slightly higher scores in that species area of expertise. I’ve seen a few forum posts decrying the droid build saying that you can only be as good as a non-droid character in a relatively narrow area of expertise, TBH I have no idea if this is true or not since my own choice of droids as a species has nothing whatsoever to do with the characteristics that you get.
